Annular Eclipse

Annular Eclipse of the Sun - May 20, 2012

This image was taken only a few moments after the maximum eclipse during the annular eclipse on May 20, 2012. A small sunspot is visible at the bottom of the annular ring. At my location near Reno, Nevada, the annular portion of the eclipse, (the time between second contact and third contact), lasted a total of 4 minutes and 18 seconds. Maximum eclipse was at 01:30:57 UT. The Sun was at an altitude of 17 degrees during maximum eclipse. The eclipse ended (fourth contact) at 02:37 UT while the Sun was still at an altitude of 5 degrees.

This image was taken with a Takahashi FS-78 refractor mounted on a modified Takahashi EM-10 mount using a Canon EOS Digital Rebel SLR camera. The sunlight was filtered with a Thousand Oaks Optical Type 2+ solar filter.
